Keeping your closet tidy often starts with finding a proper home for your shoes. With shoes for every occasion—special events, work, the gym, and more—it's easy for your footwear collection to grow out of control. Here are four effective methods to store and organize your shoes, helping you cut the clutter and protect your collection.

1. Simple Shoe Storage Rack

A basic shoe storage rack is one of the easiest ways to keep your shoes off the floor and neatly arranged. A sleek shoe rack fits nicely into most decor styles and can hold several pairs of shoes, making it a versatile option for any space.

Don’t limit yourself to just the closet—place a shoe rack by your front or back door to keep shoes handy and prevent dirt from tracking into your home. According to life coach and organizer Carly Tizzano, "Storing shoes near the entryway makes them easy to access and put away."

If your shoe collection is extensive, consider stacking pairs to maximize space on the rack.

2. Over-the-Door Shoe Rack

For households with a lot of shoes but limited space, an over-the-door shoe rack is a game-changer. This space-saving solution can accommodate multiple pairs without taking up valuable floor or closet space.

“Over-the-door shoe hangers or hanging shoe shelves offer a variety of options to match your home’s aesthetic,” says Tizzano. “Opaque or woven materials can hide the shoes, while clear options showcase your collection.”

Simply hang the rack over a closet door, slip in your shoes, and close the door to keep everything tucked away until you need them.

3. Utilize Vertical and Horizontal Space

Make the most of your closet by using both vertical and horizontal space. Adding a shoe rack under hanging clothes, installing shoe holders on the back of doors, or using risers between shelves can help you store more shoes in less space.

“Alternating the direction of each shoe in a pair can also save space,” suggests Shara Kay of SK Organizing. “One shoe facing forward and the other facing backward allows them to nest together more efficiently.”

4. Shoe Storage Boxes

For those who want a more modular solution, shoe storage boxes are an excellent choice. Clear acrylic boxes or stackable bins let you safely store and showcase your shoes while keeping them organized.

To maintain your shoes’ shape, Kay recommends stuffing tissue inside delicate pairs and using dust bags or boxes for protection. Regularly dusting and vacuuming your closet, along with ensuring adequate air circulation, will also help preserve your footwear.
